The Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah Chair of Contemporary Arab Studies at the Georgetown University Center for Contemporary Arab Studies (CCAS) was endowed in June 1980, and named in honor of the late Emir of Kuwait, H.R.H. Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah (r. 1965-1977). Throughout its history, the Al-Sabah Endowed Fund at Georgetown University has supported advanced scholarship, research, and teaching on the Arab world, and has enriched and solidified Georgetown University’s reputation as a source of informed and reliable commentary on U.S. relations with the region. The Al-Sabah Chairholder is a distinguished specialist in the politics and political economy of the Arab world generally, and of Kuwait and the Arab States of the Gulf in particular. The position combines profound knowledge of the region with a proven record of research, publication, and service in related fields of academia and public policy. Currently, Dr. Joseph Sassoon has been appointed Associate Professor and Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah Chair at the Center.
